"9. To pay [Ushr] the poor due upon agriculturalists excess produce. (An'aam 141)"
I know about 2.5% zakat. Where did Ushr come in from? In how many muslim countries is it practiced? Was it not introduced by Zia in 80s?
apparently not !
I don't know about other countries Faizee bhai.
Btw the Sufis say zakat is not 2.5%.
That's just the minimum. Zakat according to them, as in the Qur'an Sharif, is whatever is "'awfa" i.e. whatever we have in excess of what we need.
jazak Allah to both for visiting & salam alaykum.
I too am not aware of 'ushr' being practiced in other countries. I think its only practiced in the subcontinent(?). Your post got my attention because for the first time I saw a verse in support of ushr. Which I think is for Zakat basically.
Yeah Zakat is minimum 2.5% But 'afwa' is for khairat/ sadaqah (2:219). Consider charity the whole pie. 2.5% of it is obligatory. No matter what circumstances you have.. you have to give it. (3:134)
