Sufism in the Qur'an

The titles are self explanatory. Suffice it to add that all true Sufism is contained in the Qur'an.

I will probably be editing and adding to this over the next few weeks, so bear with me. However, since the basic argument is here, I'm putting this up immediately. God knows best.

The translations are mostly from Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall.

*************************************

THE PURPOSE OF LIFE
53/42 And that thy Lord, He is the goal;

51/56 I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.

7/125 They said: Lo! We are about to return unto our Lord!

2/165 ... true believers are more extreme in their love for God
*[my translation]

64/3 He created the heavens and the earth with truth, and He shaped you and made good your shapes, and unto Him is the journeying.

57/9 He it is Who sendeth down clear revelations unto His slave, that He may bring you forth from darkness unto light; and lo! for you, Allah is Full of Pity, Merciful.
57/12-14 On the day when thou (Muhammad) wilt see the believers, men and women, their light shining forth before them and on their right hands, (and wilt hear it said unto them): Glad news for you this day: Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein ye are immortal. That is the supreme triumph.
On the day when the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women will say unto those who believe: Look on us that we may borrow from your light! it will be said: Go back and seek for light! Then there will separate them a wall wherein is a gate, the inner side whereof containeth mercy, while the outer side thereof is toward the doom.
They will cry unto them (saying): Were we not with you ? They will say: Yea, verily; but ye tempted one another, and hesitated, and doubted, and vain desires beguiled you till the ordinance of Allah came to pass; and the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah;

56/7-14 And ye will be three kinds:
First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand ?
And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand ?
And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
Those are they who will be brought nigh
In gardens of delight;
A multitude of those of old
And a few of those of later time.

84/6 Thou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).

9/72 Allah promiseth to the believers, men and women, Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide - blessed dwellings in Gardens of Eden. And - greater (far)! - acceptance from Allah. That is the supreme triumph.

THE SUFI PATH-
THE INNER JIHAD
29/69 As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good.

29/5 Whoso looketh forward to the meeting with Allah - Allah's reckoning is surely nigh, and He is the Hearer, the Knower.
29/6 And whosoever striveth, striveth only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of His creatures.

ASSOCIATING WITH THE PIOUS
18/28 Restrain thyself along with those who cry unto their Lord at morn and evening, seeking His Countenance; and let not thine eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who followeth his own lust and whose case hath been abandoned.

9/119 O ye who believe! Be careful of your duty to Allah, and be with the Truthful.

TO FOLLOW THE PROPHET PBUH
3/31 Say, (O Muhammad, to mankind): If ye love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

ZIKR: THE REMEMBRANCE OF GOD
13/28 Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!

2/152 Therefore remember Me, I will remember you. Give thanks to Me, and reject not Me.
2/153 O ye who believe! Seek help in steadfastness and prayer. Lo! Allah is with the steadfast.

24/37 Men whom neither merchandise nor sale beguileth from remembrance of Allah and constancy in prayer and paying to the poor their due; who fear a day when hearts and eyeballs will be overturned;

REMEMBRANCE & FAITH
15/98-99 But hymn the praise of thy Lord, and be of those who make prostration (unto Him).
And serve thy Lord till the Inevitable [Real Faith- al-Yaqeen] cometh unto thee.

CONTENTMENT WITH GOD,
& ASCETICISM [ZUHD] CONDEMNATION OF THE WORLDLY/HEDONISTIC LIFE

20/130-131 Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance.
And strain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoy, the flower of the life of the world, that We may try them thereby. The provision of thy Lord is better and more lasting.

15/88 Strain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoy, and be not grieved on their account, and lower thy wing (in tenderness) for the believers.

11/15-16 Whoso desireth the life of the world and its pomp, We shall repay them their deeds herein, and therein they will not be wronged.
Those are they for whom is naught in the Hereafter save the Fire.
(All) that they contrive here is vain and (all) that they are wont to do is fruitless.

79/37-39 Then, as for him who rebelled
And chose the life of the world,
Lo! Hell will be his home.

63/9 O ye who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers.

64/14-15 O ye who believe! Lo! among your wives and your children there are enemies for you, therefor beware of them. And if ye efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Your wealth and your children are only a temptation, whereas Allah! with Him is an immense reward.

51/50 Therefor flee unto Allah...!

FAQR or SPIRITUAL POVERTY
35.015 O mankind! Ye are the poor in your relation to Allah. And Allah! He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

100/8-11 And lo! in the love of wealth he is violent.
Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth
And the secrets of the breasts are made known,
On that day will their Lord be perfectly informed concerning them.

47/36-38 The life of the world is but a sport and a pastime. And if ye believe and ward off (evil). He will give you your wages, and will not ask of you your wordly wealth.
If He should ask it of you and importune you, ye would hoard it, and He would bring to light your (secret) hates.
Lo! ye are those who are called to spend in the way of Allah, yet among you there are some who hoard. And as for him who hoardeth, he hoardeth only from his soul. And Allah is the Rich, and ye are the poor. And if ye turn away He will exchange you for some other folk, and they will not be the likes of you.

QUALITIES TO ACQUIRE FOR THOSE WHO DESIRE NEARNESS
23/57-61 Lo! those who go in awe for fear of their Lord; And those who believe in the revelations of their Lord; And those who ascribe not partners unto their Lord; And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord These race for the good things, and they shall win them in the race.
[see 56/10 under "the Purpose of life" above]

25/63-76 The (faithful) slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace; And who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing, And who say: Our Lord! Avert from us the doom of hell; lo! the doom thereof is anguish; Lo! it is wretched as abode and station; And those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two; And those who cry not unto any other god along with Allah, nor take the life which Allah hath forbidden save in (course of) justice, nor commit adultery - and whoso doeth this shall pay the penalty; The doom will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein disdained for ever;
Save him who repenteth and believeth and doth righteous work; as for such, Allah will change their evil deeds to good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.
And whosoever repenteth and doeth good, he verily repenteth toward Allah with true repentance -
And those who will not witness vanity, but when they pass near senseless play, pass by with dignity. And those who, when they are reminded of the revelations of their Lord, fall not deaf and blind thereat.
And who say: Our Lord! Vouchsafe us comfort of our wives and of our offspring, and make us patterns for (all) those who ward off (evil).
They will be awarded the high place forasmuch as they were steadfast, and they will meet therein with welcome and the ward of peace, Abiding there for ever. Happy is it as abode and station!

87/14-19 He is successful who groweth, And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth, But ye prefer the life of the world -Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
Lo! This is in the former scrolls- The Books of Abraham and Moses.

11/111-115 And lo! unto each thy Lord will verily repay his works in full. Lo! He is Informed of what they do. So tread thou the straight path as thou art commanded, and those who turn (unto Allah) with thee, and transgress not. Lo! He is Seer of what ye do; And incline not toward those who do wrong lest the Fire touch you, and ye have no protecting friends against Allah, and afterward ye would not be helped.
Establish worship at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night. Lo! good deeds annul ill-deeds. This is reminder for the mindful; And have patience, (O Muhammad), for lo! Allah loseth not the wages of the good.

70/22-34 Save worshippers; Who are constant at their worship; And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged; For the beggar and the destitute; And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - And those who preserve their chastity- Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;
But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, And those who stand by their testimony; And those who are attentive at their worship.

[please see my more comprehensive posts, all from the Qur'an itself, entitled What God has Enjoined & What God has Forbidden in the sidebar]

IMPORTANCE OF RITUAL PRAYER
29/45 Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.

96/19 ....But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).

2/45-46 Seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble-minded,
Who know that they will have to meet their Lord, and that unto Him they are returning.

23/1-11 Successful indeed are the believers
Who are humble in their prayers,
And who shun vain conversation,
And who are payers of the poor-due;
And who guard their modesty -
Save from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,
But whoso craveth beyond that, such are transgressors -
And who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant,
And who pay heed to their prayers.
These are the heirs
Who will inherit paradise. There they will abide.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BEAUTIFUL NAMES OF GOD
7/180 Allah's are the fairest names. Invoke Him by them. And leave the company of those who blaspheme His names. They will be requited what they do.

ESOTERIC [OR HIDDEN] KNOWLEDGE

a. Special Knowledge of the Scripture

27/39-40 A stalwart of the jinn said: I will bring it thee before thou canst rise from thy place. Lo! I verily am strong and trusty for such work.
One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: I will bring it thee before thy gaze returneth unto thee. And when he saw it set in his presence, (Solomon) said: This is of the bounty of my Lord, that He may try me whether I give thanks or am ungrateful. Whosoever giveth thanks he only giveth thanks for (the good of) his own soul; and whosoever is ungrateful (is ungrateful only to his own soul's hurt). For lo! my Lord is Absolute in independence, Bountiful.

b. knowledge from God's Presence.

18/65 Then found they one of Our slaves, unto whom We had given mercy from Us, and had taught him knowledge from Our presence.

c. Hidden knowledge given to Prophets & Angels.

72/26-28 (He is) the Knower of the Unseen, and He revealeth unto none His secret,
Save unto every messenger whom He hath chosen, and then He maketh a guard to go before him and a guard behind him
That He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surroundeth all their doings, and He keepeth count of all things.

WISDOM:
2/269 He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.

NO IRON CURTAIN BETWEEN US & THE SPIRIT WORLD

39/42 Allah receiveth (men's) souls at the time of their death, and that (soul) which dieth not (yet) in its sleep. He keepeth that (soul) for which He hath ordained death and dismisseth the rest till an appointed term. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought.

WHOM SATANS VISIT & WHOM ANGELS VISIT
26/221-222 Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend ?
They descend on every sinful, false one.

41/30-32 Lo! those who say: Our Lord is Allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not nor grieve, but hear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised.
We are your protecting friends in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There ye will have (all) that your souls desire, and there ye will have (all) for which ye pray.
A gift of welcome from One Forgiving, Merciful.

NIGHT WORSHIP IN ADDITION TO THE 5 DAILY PRAYERS
32/16 Who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed on them.

25/64 And who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing.

73/1-9 O thou wrapped up in thy raiment!
Keep vigil the night long, save a little -
A half thereof, or abate a little thereof
Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure,
For we shall charge thee with a word of weight.
Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain.
Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business.
So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion -
Lord of the East and the West; there is no God save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender -

17/78-82 Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of night, and (the recital of) the Qur'an at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Qur'an at dawn is ever witnessed.
And some part of the night awake for it, a largess for thee. It may be that thy Lord will raise thee to a praised estate.
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
And say: Truth hath come and falsehood hath vanished away. Lo! falsehood is ever bound to vanish.
And We reveal of the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy for believers though it increase the evil-doers in naught save ruin.

TRUTHFULNESS
33/24 That Allah may reward the true men for their truth, and punish the hypocrites if He will, or relent toward them (if He will). Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

PURIFICATION
74/1-7 O thou enveloped in thy cloak,
Arise and warn!
Thy Lord magnify,
Thy raiment purify,
Pollution shun!
And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!
For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!

2/222 ... And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness.

jazakAllah bhai, I think esoteric knowledge of various kinds does exist

My God firgive the Sufis, guide the sufis to the right path and give them understanding of the path of God - the Islam.

If you look at each of these verses you find that none of these verses has anything to do about sufism, literally or metaphorically. All you find here is the SUFISTIC INTERPRETATION of Gods revelation and they are absolutely misleading.
